BOY SCOUTS HELP THE HUNGRY
Families in our community need help with food and supply assistance! Saturday, February 6th, Boy Scouts will be visiting your neighborhood kicking off their annual "Scouting for Food" campaign. You can help by filling a "Scouting for Food" bag.
On the February 6th, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Crews will be distributing bags so you can donate non-perishable canned, boxed food, or other household items. Then, a week later on Saturday, February 13th, Scouts will be visiting again to collect your donated items, taking them either to the Second Harvest Food Bank or a local food pantry in your community.
"Youth and adult members of the Great Smoky Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America place others before themselves," says David Foil, Director of Field Services. "Do a good turn has been part of the Scout creed for 100 years. In 1942, during World War II, Scouts collected 30 million pounds of rubber as part of a national Good Turn project. Today in East Tennessee, the need is food and the tradition of Scouts helping others continues", Foil says.
Some suggested items include: canned soup and broth, vegetables, baby food and supplies, baking mixes, first aid and household medical and hygiene supplies. Please no perishable foods or medications of any kind. Place your donations in the bag, leave it on your doorstep by 8am Saturday morning and be prepared for a group of Scouts to collect the items.
Donations can also be taken to Food City stores in Knoxville, Maryville, Oak Ridge and Sevierville, or the Boy Scout Service Center, 1333 Old Weisgarber Road in Knoxville.
